Description of Lipica and Karst day trip

Karst region, well known for its vast underground cave world, is among the Slovenian regions, that kept their traditional spirit very much alive and you can see it in the pristine landscape as well as the traditional old villages with stone architecture.

In the heart of Karst, lies a special European heritage gem, the original Lipica stud farm, where horses have been bred since 1580 for the Hapsburgs royals. The Lipizzaner horses are best known for their incredible performances in Vienna and their grace is admired around the world.

Visit the stud farm estate, which stretches over 300 hectares (750 acres), and spot some of the herds out on the green meadows, surrounded by white wooden fences with alleys of trees and pathways. Visit the oldest part, the old stables, the manor and learn about the history of the place on a guided tour. Meet the horses, the best of breeding stallions in the stables, as well as the mares and foals roaming the grazing grounds. On certain days* you can opt to see the training for the Spanish riding school performance, or take a carriage ride around the estate.

We will head to a traditional Karst village, where you will learn about the production of traditional prosciutto style ham  - Kraški pršut and a special local wine - teranBoth are protected under the EU with the European designation of originYou will be able to try both of these regional specialties along with other traditional cured meats and cheeses on a food tasting at a local farm.

Our family was staying near the town of Koper and wanted to see some other parts of the Karst. The kids wanted to see the famous Lipizzaner horses. They got their wish and we got such a nice outing out of it with some incredible countryside photo ops. Thanks guys!

The Karst region is beautiful and calm. We wanted to travel around but didn’t quite know where to start, so we booked this trip on the fly and were amazed by all the hidden corners and old villages we saw.

Public transport in the coastal part isn’t very reliable and so we decided to book an organized trip around the Karst. It was really worth it. The hamlets and landscape are very pretty. It all has such a Mediterranean feel, but with a kind of inland vibe. Visiting the cute white horses was a cherry on top for the kids. Definitely recommend this.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do we meet for the day trip?

Our pickup and drop-off location that we use in Koper is the port area. In case you would like to be picked up / dropped off at a different location, we can accommodate that with a surcharge of 9€/booking. Your driver will be driving between multiple pickup locations, so we kindly ask you to allow a 20-minute window for your pickup, although we will do our best to be there on time.

What should I wear on the day trip? Do I have to bring anything with me?

It is important to dress for the season. Slovenia has all 4 seasons, so please check the weather forecast before the day trip regarding temperatures and rainfall. When you are close to the Alps, the weather can change fairly quickly, so your best bet is to always bring an extra layer. We recommend shoes you will be comfortable in. If you are visiting caves, please remember that the caves are cold in the summer, as the cave temperature is constant throughout the year.

Is there lunch at a restaurant or do I have to bring my own?

The best thing about our day trips is that they can be tailored to your own level of fitness. Most of the tours are designed with different activities available, so the choice is entirely yours. Please consult the difficulty section under a specific day trip to see what the difficulty level of the tour and particular activity is.

I have food restrictions. Are there restaurants for me?

It really depends on the level of your restriction. Vegetarian options are fairly easy to find in Slovenia, but vegan dishes, on the other hand, are extremely hard to come by in rural areas of the country and in smaller towns. Please note, that the places where we stop off at for lunch are often traditional and may have difficulties accommodating you outside of their standard menu. We suggest you keep this in mind.
