Description of a day trip to Ljubljana & Bled

Depart the port in Koper and head north, to the Slovenian Alps, where you can find Lake Bled, the famous attraction in Slovenia. Nestled between mountains, this is a stunning sight, which you should not miss while stopping in Slovenia. With its charming island, it attracts visitors from all over the world and yes, it is as beautiful as in the photos. You can enjoy your guide’s information on the area, as well as local legends and stories and then choose to explore this alpine resort on your own. There are beautiful trails along the lake shore, a stunning parish church and plenty of cafes and restaurants, as well as shops to keep you busy.

You will be able to choose between two popular experiences:

Bled Castle, the oldest castle in Slovenia with a history of over 1000 years. Visit its interesting exhibitions and find local souvenirs in the castle’s shop. Here you can also taste the famous “Kremšnita” cream cake - trust us, you don’t want to miss it.

Or you can embark on the traditional “pletna” boat and let the oarsmen do the work while you sit back and enjoy the remarkable scenery of the surrounding mountains and the tranquillity of the green waters. Walk around the small island or visit the scenic church, famous for its wishing bell.

After Bled, we will continue to Ljubljana, located in the very heart of Slovenia. It a must-see for any visitor. It will charm you with its laid-back vibes, the buzz on the river banks of Ljubljanica and its stunningly pretty architecture, that spans through centuries. Let your guide take you on a journey through history, where you will learn all about the famous dragon and other local legends. Stop at landmarks, such as Prešeren Square, Three Bridges, the Dragon Bridge, Central Market, Congress Square and enjoy the small streets of the charming old town.

Ljubljana is insanely beautiful! The town centre is so small you can get a very good feel for the place in no time. I especially loved the castle on the hill and the quaint streets in the old town. The trip to Bled was incredible as well. It’s like on the postcards, except so much prettier!

This day trip is perfect for people who want to see a bit more of the areas surrounding lake Bled. The small remote villages are not very touristy and the nature is so wild you won’t believe it. It was also nice to have some free time to be able to go swimming in the lake and walk around.

I’ve been to Ljubljana a couple of years ago, but wanted to see it again. I booked this trip because lake Bled was on my bucket list since my last visit to Slovenia. It’s quite touristy but it’s not nearly as crowded as I expected. When you’re there, it feels like stepping into a fairy tale! The distances we travelled were so small and the countryside seemed to change with every mile we covered. An amazing trip that I can’t stop telling my friends about. It’s also perfect if you don’t want to rent a car or mess around with public transport.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do we meet for the day trip?

Our pickup and drop-off location that we use in Zagreb is the bus station. In case you would like to be picked up / dropped off at a different location, we can accommodate that at a surcharge.

What should I wear on the day trip? Do I have to bring anything with me?

It is important to dress for the season. Slovenia has all 4 seasons, so please check the weather forecast before the day trip regarding temperatures and rainfall. When you are close to the Alps, the weather can change fairly quickly, so your best bet is to always bring an extra layer. We recommend shoes you will be comfortable in. If you are visiting caves, please remember that the caves are cold in the summer, as the cave temperature is constant throughout the year.

Is there lunch at a restaurant or do I have to bring my own?

You have the option of both. We have a time slot reserved for lunch on each tour, always somewhere with (usually local) restaurants handy. That said, you can always pack your own picnic lunch and eat it wherever and whenever you like. This might sometimes even save time in order to fit a bit of extra sightseeing into your day.

I have food restrictions. Are there restaurants for me?

It really depends on the level of your restriction. Vegetarian options are fairly easy to find in Slovenia, but vegan dishes, on the other hand, are extremely hard to come by in rural areas of the country and in smaller towns. Please note, that the places where we stop off at for lunch are often traditional and may have difficulties accommodating you outside of their standard menu. We suggest you keep this in mind.

How fit do I need to be for Ljubljana & Bled from Zagreb trip?

The best thing about our day trips is that they can be tailored to your own level of fitness. Most of the tours are designed with different activities available, so the choice is entirely yours. Please consult the difficulty section under a specific day trip to see what the difficulty level of the tour and particular activity is.

How do the “extras” work?

There is so much to do in Slovenia, so we wanted to give you the option of choosing exactly how you would like to spend your time here. Which is why we have compiled a list of popular activities in the areas of your visit and categorized them as extras. Therefore, the choice of which and how many you would like to experience is entirely up to you. We set up some of the most popular activities in the areas of your visit and listed them as extras. The choice of how many and which you would like to do is entirely yours. When you arrive to a destination, such as Lake Bled, the itinerary always allows for any additional activities you might want to do, like visiting Bled Castle or taking a traditional boat ride to the island. You can book all of your chosen extras in advance. Your guide will confirm the bookings with you on the tour and make sure you know everything you need to know. It is always exciting when people come away from the same trip enriched by different adventures and can share and compare their experiences along with the tons of photos they have taken.

I am travelling on a budget - what if I can’t afford all the extras?

Don’t worry. Our day trips are planned with everyone in mind. If you find an entrance fee too expensive, or you are unsure if you are willing to spend so much of your budget on entrance fees, our guides will always have some free alternatives ready for you. From taking a short hike and finding that perfect photo opportunity, to relaxing in a beautiful spot, we have got you covered.

Will I have some time to myself?

If you want to, sure! We are well aware that some people love to stay in groups while others prefer some more alone time on their trip. We wanted to give you the opportunity to do things your way. It is your holiday, after all! As long as you respect the group timings and locations designated by your guide, please feel free to customize your itinerary and create your own adventure!
