Vintgar Gorge

Carved amidst splendid vertical walls by the Radovna River, Vintgar Gorge is a wonderful day trip destination.

Vintgar Gorge is a 1.6-km gorge located near Lake Bled in Triglav National Park. It was carved by the Radovna, a pristine river that turns emerald green or aqua colour, depending on the light. Attracting thousands of visitors each year, this beautiful place is among Slovenia’s most prized natural landmarks.

Vintgar Gorge was discovered in 1891. Inaccessible in its natural form, over 500 metres of wooden bridges and galleries were built in 1893 to create boardwalks for easier public use. An educational trail runs through the gorge, which ends with the 13-m Šum Waterfall, one of three river waterfalls in Slovenia. It is especially refreshing to visit during hot summer months. But be warned, the gorge tends to get quite packed in July and August when the high season is in full swing.

A study trail runs across the gorge and the wooden bridges as well as Žumer galleries, which ends with the mighty 13 metres high Šum river waterfall, one of the three river waterfalls in Slovenia.

Vintgar also features two awe-inspiring manmade elements. A dam built for the small Vintgar hydro plant below the waterfall, and the stone arch bridge of the Bohinj railway. Built in 1905, the cute 33.5-m bridge crosses the 53-m wide gorge.
