Description of day trip to Bohinj

Only a short drive from the lake and tucked into a narrow valley, lies the Vintgar Gorge, one of the most popular attractions around Bled. A 1.5 hour hike will lead you through the ravine as you admire the clear flow of Radovna River, walk over bridges and tread the boardwalks, every bend more picturesque than the last.

Our journey will continue on the Pokljuka Plateau, famous for its hiking and cross-country skiing trails where biathlon championships are held every year. Its wonderful pine forests are a remarkable sight, growing at elevation reaching well above 1000 meters (3280 feet). From this home to abundant flora and fauna we will descend on a windy road to the glacially-made marvel of Lake Bohinj.

We will plan for a lunch stop - either at a traditional local restaurant, or a picnic lunch at one of the meadows if you bring your own. Next, we will continue to Lake Bohinj, which lies at the heart of Triglav National Park. Most locals prefer the tranquillity and unspoilt nature of Lake Bohinj to the more famous Lake Bled. The views over the water, and, if you are lucky, over the mountains, are sure to leave you speechless. Hear local legends, take some perfect snaps and choose how you will spend the rest of your afternoon.

There is some nice hiking in the area and you can choose from a few different options. You can hike another beautiful gorge called Mostnica (most=bridge), which differs from Vintgar Gorge mainly in the fact that you are not in it but rather walking on top or over it on multiple bridges, giving you a look down the narrow crevices.

If you prefer a bit more exercise, then the hike on some 550+ steps leading to Savica Waterfall* is just for you. The reward at the top is a stunning double green waterfall of the clearest mountain waters.

For the best views of the area, you should opt for a cable car ride up to Vogel Mountain, where you will feel like the entire Lake Bohinj would fit into the palm of your hand as you witness the crown of alpine peaks surrounding the lake. Optionally, you can spend time walking along the lake’s shores or use the afternoon for a refreshing swim in the summer months.

Lake Bohinj is very different from lake Bled. More mountains, more nature… I took the cable car up to the ski resort and the views were amazing. We had a really nice drive in the forest in Triglav National park and learned so much about the place. I’m sure to come back soon!

This day trip is perfect for people who want to see a bit more of the areas surrounding lake Bled. The small remote villages are not very touristy and the nature is so wild you won’t believe it. It was also nice to have some free time to be able to go swimming in the lake and walk around.

What a nice family trip with such friendly guides and good transportation. Bohinj is a pretty area, our family really enjoyed the hike. We liked the less busy spots with no crowds of tourists. We warmly recommend this trip to everyone!

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do we meet for the day trip?

Our pickup and drop-off location that we use in Bled is the bus station. In case you would like to be picked up / dropped off at a different location, we can accommodate that with a surcharge of 9€/booking. Your driver will be driving between multiple pickup locations, so we kindly ask you to allow a 20-minute window for your pickup, although we will do our best to be there on time.

Is there lunch at a restaurant or do I have to bring my own?

You have the option of both. We have a time slot reserved for lunch on each tour, always somewhere with (usually local) restaurants handy. That said, you can always pack your own picnic lunch and eat it wherever and whenever you like. This might sometimes even save time in order to fit a bit of extra sightseeing into your day.

How fit do I need to be for Bled to lake Bohinj trip?

The best thing about our day trips is that they can be tailored to your own level of fitness. Most of the tours are designed with different activities available, so the choice is entirely yours. Please consult the difficulty section under a specific day trip to see what the difficulty level of the tour and particular activity is.

I am travelling on a budget - what if I can’t afford all the extras?

Don’t worry. Our day trips are planned with everyone in mind. If you find an entrance fee too expensive, or you are unsure if you are willing to spend so much of your budget on entrance fees, our guides will always have some free alternatives ready for you. From taking a short hike and finding that perfect photo opportunity, to relaxing in a beautiful spot, we have got you covered.

Will I have some time to myself?

If you want to, sure! We are well aware that some people love to stay in groups while others prefer some more alone time on their trip. We wanted to give you the opportunity to do things your way. It is your holiday, after all! As long as you respect the group timings and locations designated by your guide, please feel free to customize your itinerary and create your own adventure!

What should I wear for lake Bohinj day trip? Do I have to bring anything with me?

It is important to dress for the season. Slovenia has all 4 seasons, so please check the weather forecast before the day trip regarding temperatures and rainfall. When you are close to the Alps, the weather can change fairly quickly, so your best bet is to always bring an extra layer. We recommend shoes you will be comfortable in. If you are visiting caves, please remember that the caves are cold in the summer, as the cave temperature is constant throughout the year.

I have food restrictions. Are there restaurants for me?

It really depends on the level of your restriction. Vegetarian options are fairly easy to find in Slovenia, but vegan dishes, on the other hand, are extremely hard to come by in rural areas of the country and in smaller towns. Please note, that the places where we stop off at for lunch are often traditional and may have difficulties accommodating you outside of their standard menu. We suggest you keep this in mind.

How do the “extras” work?

There is so much to do in Slovenia, so we wanted to give you the option of choosing exactly how you would like to spend your time here. Which is why we have compiled a list of popular activities in the areas of your visit and categorized them as extras. Therefore, the choice of which and how many you would like to experience is entirely up to you. We set up some of the most popular activities in the areas of your visit and listed them as extras. The choice of how many and which you would like to do is entirely yours. When you arrive to a destination, such as Lake Bled, the itinerary always allows for any additional activities you might want to do, like visiting Bled Castle or taking a traditional boat ride to the island. You can book all of your chosen extras in advance. Your guide will confirm the bookings with you on the tour and make sure you know everything you need to know. It is always exciting when people come away from the same trip enriched by different adventures and can share and compare their experiences along with the tons of photos they have taken.
