The silent guardian from above, the Ljubljana castle dates back to the 11th century when it was constructed as a medieval fortress. Although the majority of its buildings were built in the 16th and 17th century, the castle had acquired its present outline with an almost complete overhaul in the 15th century.

The Ljubljana Castle has seen empires and states come and go. The castle and its immediate surroundings are steeped in history and offer interesting facts about the development of Ljubljana through the ages. The castle’s lookout tower affords the most spectacular views of Ljubljana and its surrounding area.

It’s a popular all-year-round location among locals and tourists alike. Numerous events are held on its grounds, like the open-air cinema called Cinema Under the Stars, various art exhibitions, concerts, weddings, etc. Within its walls, visitors can find a lovely puppet museum, an ‘Escape the Castle’ adventure game, an exhibition of Slovenian history, a wine shop, café, and a famous restaurant that serves incredible culinary delights.

A visit to Ljubljana simply cannot pass without venturing up to its amazing symbol at least one. And if you couldn’t be bothered walking up the castle hill, there’s a funicular that takes you up there in minutes.
