Karst region, well known for its vast underground cave world, is among the Slovenian regions, that kept their traditional spirit very much alive and you can see it in the pristine landscape as well as the traditional old villages with stone architecture.

In the heart of Karst, lies a special European heritage gem, the original Lipica stud farm, where horses have been bred since 1580 for the Hapsburgs royals. The Lipizzaner horses are best known for their incredible performances in Vienna and their grace is admired around the world.

Visit the stud farm estate, which stretches over 300 hectares (750 acres), and spot some of the herds out on the green meadows, surrounded by white wooden fences with alleys of trees and pathways. Visit the oldest part, the old stables, the manor and learn about the history of the place on a guided tour. Meet the horses, the best of breeding stallions in the stables, as well as the mares and foals roaming the grazing grounds. On certain days* you can opt to see the training for the Spanish riding school performance, or take a carriage ride around the estate.

We will head to a traditional Karst village, where you will learn about the production of traditional prosciutto style ham  – Kraški pršut and a special local wine – teranBoth are protected under the EU with the European designation of originYou will be able to try both of these regional specialties along with other traditional cured meats and cheeses on a food tasting at a local farm.
