Description of Predjama castle & Postojna cave trip

Postojna Cave is the cradle of cave explorations in the world and one of the most visited attractions in Slovenia. Start with an exciting train ride that will take you deep underground to the towering halls of Postojna Cave. Join a walking tour through the unique world of dripstones and halls, all created millions of years ago, and learn about the active growth of the cave as well as the enigmatic fauna inside it.

Meet an incredible creature, the olm, which lives inside these caves and is called “the human fish” (človeška ribica) in Slovenian due to its skin-like color. It has been nicknamed “the baby dragon” due to its visual similarities to the mythological beasts. This spectacular place below the surface has been visited for the last 200 years by over 38 million people from around the world.

Our next stop will be Predjama Castle, a unique medieval structure built into a sheer cliff around the mouth of a cave. It boasts a Guinness world record as the largest cave castle in the world. It was home to the legendary Erazem of Predjama, a rogue knight whose story rivals that of Robin Hood. Optionally, take an audio-guided tour through the multiple levels of the castle (*there are roughly 200 steps inside) or take in the panorama from the outside while enjoying a drink or a picnic.

Me and my family were based in Bled for a holiday and heard a lot about Slovenia being famous for its caves, so we decided to take a day trip to Postojna. Oh, boy, what a surprise! I’ve been in caves before, but nothing like this. Stunning! I think I enjoyed the underground train ride as much as our kids, if not more! Plus, the guide was great – very patient and friendly. An absolutely fantastic trip!

Bled is spectacular and we wanted to see a few other gems of Slovenia. I was surprised to learn how quickly you can get from one place to another in this country. We went to see the Postojna cave and Predjama castle. Both are amazing. A perfect trip with a perfect guide and a comfortable ride with a minibus van. Highly recommend it!

I found this tour when I was looking for a rainy-day alternative and it was awesome! The company organizing the day trip was easy to book with and when I called them up, they were very helpful. The Postojna Cave is incredible, huge and beautiful. And they weren’t kidding about the baby dragon called the human fish. It really does exist. :) The Predjama castle is a wonder all on its own. How did they manage to build within a rocky cliff like that back in the old day is beyond me.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do we meet for the day trip?

Our pickup and drop-off location that we use in Bled is the bus station. In case you would like to be picked up / dropped off at a different location, we can accommodate that with a surcharge of 9€/booking. Your driver will be driving between multiple pickup locations, so we kindly ask you to allow a 20-minute window for your pickup, although we will do our best to be there on time.

Is there lunch at a restaurant or do I have to bring my own?

You have the option of both. We have a time slot reserved for lunch on each tour, always somewhere with (usually local) restaurants handy. That said, you can always pack your own picnic lunch and eat it wherever and whenever you like. This might sometimes even save time in order to fit a bit of extra sightseeing into your day.

What should I wear for Postojna day trip? Do I have to bring anything with me?

It is important to dress for the season. Slovenia has all 4 seasons, so please check the weather forecast before the day trip regarding temperatures and rainfall. When you are close to the Alps, the weather can change fairly quickly, so your best bet is to always bring an extra layer. We recommend shoes you will be comfortable in. If you are visiting caves, please remember that the caves are cold in the summer, as the cave temperature is constant throughout the year.

I have food restrictions. Are there restaurants for me?

It really depends on the level of your restriction. Vegetarian options are fairly easy to find in Slovenia, but vegan dishes, on the other hand, are extremely hard to come by in rural areas of the country and in smaller towns. Please note, that the places where we stop off at for lunch are often traditional and may have difficulties accommodating you outside of their standard menu. We suggest you keep this in mind.

How do the “extras” work?

There is so much to do in Slovenia, so we wanted to give you the option of choosing exactly how you would like to spend your time here. Which is why we have compiled a list of popular activities in the areas of your visit and categorized them as extras. Therefore, the choice of which and how many you would like to experience is entirely up to you. We set up some of the most popular activities in the areas of your visit and listed them as extras.
